The big-screen adaptation of Dr. Seuss‘ classic children’s book The Lorax brought in big bucks this weekend at the box office.
Largely aided by a 3D release, the film update of the 1971 Seuss classic easily became 2012’s highest-debuting flick.
Earning $17.4 million on Friday alone, The Lorax had the best opening day ever for a Dr. Seuss film, exceeding the day one take of 2000’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas ($15.6 million). If early estimates hold, the film is projected to have the best opening ever for a non-sequel animated film.
The teen party thriller Project X debuted in second place this weekend, earning a $20.8 million take, which far exceeds the $12 million budget for the flick, shot over five weeks in L.A. and presented in home video format.
Rounding out this weekend’s top five movies were Roselyn Sanchez’s Act of Valor ($13.7 million), the Ryan Reynolds–Denzel Washington thriller Safe House ($7.2 million) and Tyler Perry‘s Good Deeds ($7 million).
Zac Efron was snapped on set of his latest project Heartland, which is currently filming on the Iowa Speedway. Zac appeared to be relaxed while he took a break outside the car in between takes.
The star was wearing a bit more clothes than we prefer to see him in though, as he was all suited up in his racing gear for the independent film.
Aside from making a splash at BFF Ashley Tisdale‘s birthday party over July 4th weekend, Zac has kept a relatively low profile recently.
Efron stars alongside Dennis Quaid and Kim Dickens in Heartland and appears to have a slew of other projects lined up after he finishes.
